    2022 Vermont’s Greenest Building Award & Net Zero Award

    This high-performance home, generates more energy than it consumes with an on-site 11.9 kW PV solar system. Heating and cooling are provided by a SpacePak air-to-water heat pump system, distributed through radiant floors across all three levels, with additional fan coil units for cooling.

    Domestic hot water comes from a heat pump tank heater, all appliances are Energy Star electric, and ventilation is supplied by a Broan ERV 250TE.

    The project team prioritized local materials whenever possible, even repurposing timber cleared from the property for use in the home. Functional, efficient, and beautifully designed, this residence was built to serve both the current clients and future owners for the long term, while remaining cost-conscious. Energy Use Intensity (EUI): 14.3 kBtu/sf/yr.

    At Roots Builders, we were proud to help bring the award-winning Plewak Residence to life alongside Vermont Integrated Architecture – Maclay Studio and Northeast Energy Alternatives. Built on a steeply sloping site, this single-level home with a walkout lower level was carefully designed and constructed to embody resilience and sustainability.

    Our team prioritized fossil fuel-free systems and a thoughtful use of materials, incorporating locally sourced wood for the floors and timber frame details. Low-impact landscaping and onsite stormwater management further rooted the home in harmony with its environment. With a PV array, EV charging station, and battery storage, the residence is not only energy efficient—with an impressive EUI of 23.1 kBtu/sf/yr, 56% below the single-family residential baseline—but also future-focused.
